BS5163 Standard Gate Valve with Soft Resilient Seated
Through the nut at the top of the valve and the guide groove on the valve body, rotary motion is converted into linear motion, transforming torque into thrust. When the valve is opened, with the gate lifted to a height equal to 1:1 of the valve diameter, the fluid passage is completely open. However, this position cannot be monitored during operation. In practice, the top position of the valve stem, where the gate cannot be lifted further, serves as the reference for its fully open position. To prevent locking due to temperature changes, the valve is typically opened to the top position and then turned back 1/2 to 1 turn, marking the fully open position. Therefore, the fully open position of the valve is determined by the gate's position.
